The “Bridgeton” star will play Fierro in the two-part feature adaptation, which is titled with Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Alphaba. The Universal Pictures films are set to release on Christmas in 2024 and 2025.
“Wicked” is a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz”, which tells the story of how Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.
“We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make two, not just one ‘rogue’ movie!” Chu wrote in a statement announcing the two-parter. “With more space, we can tell the story of ‘Wicked’ as it had to be told, bringing even more depth and wonder to the journey for these beloved characters.”
Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the music and lyrics on the original Broadway show, is adapting the “Wicked” screenplay with Vinnie Holzman. The musical opened on Broadway in 2003 and continues to run on Broadway, grossing over $1 billion. The show is second only to “The Lion King” as the highest-grossing Broadway musical of all time.
Mark Platt will produce the films for his Universal-based Mark Platt Productions. David Stone will also produce. Eric Byers, Universal’s Senior Executive Vice President of Production and Lexi Barta, Vice President of Production Development, will oversee the project.
In July, it was announced that Bailey would play Matt Bomer’s love interest in “Fellow Travellers”, Showtime’s limited series adaptation of Thomas Mallon’s novel of the same name. Bailey most recently starred in a West End production of the Mike Bartlett drama “Cock.” He won the Laurence Olivier Award in 2019 for his work in the London production of “The Company”.
Bailey is represented by Anonymous Content, Conway Van Gelder Grant Ltd., CAA, Relevant and Hansen, Jacobson, Taylor, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Culler, Gelman, Meigs & Fox.
