Simon Cowell Details His First Encounter with Kelly Clarkson on American Idol : ‘Stay Away From Me’

Reflecting on Simon Cowell’s Beginnings American Idol — and played Kelly Clarkson in making the reality singing competition the success it is today.

Cowell recalled when she first approached him—and reveals the hilarious reaction Clarkson gave her.

“I turned to you later because, obviously, I was thinking, ‘I think you’re gonna win this show.’ I said, ‘I just want to say, that was amazing, Kelly, and here I am.’ You turned to me and said, ‘Simon… without being rude, I wouldn’t want to talk much – talk seriously until the end of the series.’ And I’m like, ‘Wow, what does that mean? That means stay away from me. I know what I’m doing. I’m focused.'”

The “Breakaway” singer then intervened and jumped to her defense: “I didn’t want to talk to someone who was voting for us. I was just trying to be respectful. Plus, I didn’t want to.” That you get into my head – you mess with all those people.”

Cowell replied, “My gosh, it’s taken him 20 years to figure this out. It’s like a therapy session.”

The ceremony came less than two weeks after it celebrated the 20th anniversary of winning the show in its inaugural season. He marked the occasion with a post on Instagram.

“20 years ago today I won American Idol And it changed the course of my life forever. That moment was the door that opened up so much access and opportunity, and creative partnerships that I will be grateful for all my days off,” Clarkson wrote in the lengthy post.

“The family and friendships I’ve built over these 20 years in music and TV have been invaluable to me,” she continued. “We only get so many trips around the sun and while I’m proud and I feel so blessed with the successes and failures I’ve learned from, I’m most proud and grateful to have friends who become family.” and their arms that I have held me when I needed it, and their hearts listened to me when I thought I was lost.
